Sailung Trek

Sailung Trek

Overview

Sailung also known as a meeting point of nature and religion is situated southwest from Charikot at Saya Thumka hill. This is an area in off the beaten trail therefore; it is less crowded with very few tourists. To start the trek we drive from Kathmandu to Mude enjoying the wonderful scenery along the road (Kathmandu – Jiri). The trek begins from Mude (which is a small town beautifully located on the hill.) by walking on spectacular ridges of the area which finally takes us to Thulo Sailung (3150 m), the highest point of the area. Thulo Sailung is regarded by the Tamang (one of the ethnic group of Nepal) as the abode of the territorial deity and the chorten atop the hill of Sailung is seat of this divine protector, and the Tamang community is the custodian of the land. That’s why it has a great religious importance for this local community. Besides religious importance, this highest point also offers magnificent views of Annapurna, Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Rowaling, Everest and Kanchenjunga ranges as well as Mahabharata hill to the South which rolls over the Sun Koshi River and the Terai further below.

This area is mainly inhabited by Tamangs - an indigenous Buddhists community whose religion is a fusion of Buddhist Lamaism and the Shamanist (Bon culture). It is common for a village to have a Lama and a Jhankri (Shaman). Except Tamang, you will also encounter with other different ethnic people and will have an opportunity to understand and experience about their socio-economic situation, life styles, cultures and professions. This area is very less visited by tourists therefore, ideal trekking route for those people who want to avoid the traffics of the main trekking routes in order to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature along with superb view of the mountains.
