Most of its lands lie at an altitude of 4000m high above sea level. The Indus and Brahmaputra rivers originate from a lake (Tib: Tso Mapham) in Western Tibet which is near Mt Kailash. The Hindus adore the mountain because it is considered as the home of Lord Shiva. The Tibetan name for Mt. Kailash is Khang Rinpoche. Tibet has numerous high-altitude lakes including  Qinghai Lake, Lake Manasarovar, Namtso, Pangong Tso, Yamdrok Lake, Siling Co, Lhamo La-tso, Lumajangdong Co, Lake Puma Yumco, Lake Paiku, Lake Rakshastal, Dagze Co and Dong Co. The Qinghai Lake is the largest lake of China. Tibet is mostly dived into three major regions geographically. They are east north and south where eastern part is mostly covered by forest which occupies twenty five percent total area of Tibet. The northern sector of Tibet is occupied by open grassland where yak, nomads and sheep are in ample amount. The agricultural region of Tibet is its southern part where all the major cities are located.

The good time to be in Tibet is from April to November when the climate is temperate. It is a vast land so different kinds of climatic zones can be found. The Tibetan climate is not as irritating as many foreigners imagine it to be. It snows once or twice in a year and rest of the time it is always warm and lovely. Tsampa and Momo are the popular cuisine. The main occupation of the Tibetan people is raising livestock. The main crops grown are barley, wheat, buckwheat, potatoes, and various fruits and vegetables. The main Tibetan religion is Tibetan Buddhism which is distinct from other religion and practiced in many countries.

Tibetan architecture reflects a deeply Buddhist approach. The Buddhist wheel  with two dragons, can be observed on almost every Gumba. The design of the Tibetan Chortens can differ, from roundish walls in Kham to squarish, four-sided walls in Ladakh. Many of the houses and monasteries are built on high altitude facing sunny sites. Flat roofs are built to conserve heat and many windows are constructed to let in sunlight due to lack of fuel. Because of earthquake threats sloppy walls are constructed.

Presenting Khada, proposing a toast and tea, greetings, sky burials and pilgrimage are some of the popular cultures practiced in Tibet. To express best wishes in various incidents the people offer khada. While visting Tibetan family, the family members provide you toast and tea to respect guests. Strangers are not allowed to participate in sky burial which is common form in Tibet. Going for pilgrimage is a common practice in Tibet.
